Hendrik Hol biography
Born on the 23rd of September 1962 in the Netherlands. I live in Amsterdam. I am a photographer [abstract, documentary, landscape and portraitist], writer [ essayist, novelist, philosopher, poet], graphic designer and publisher in one.
Through the various menu’s you can have a look at my work – the photography, the poetry, some prose, essays on art, politics and other subjects. The accompanying photographs and graphics are all self made, unless stated otherwise.
As a photographer I am working international and I am increasingly underway to capture diverse cultures. Then I make a new publication wherein photography, essays and poetry are combined into one whole.
I am educated as a social-cultural worker and also studied Cultural Studies and Business Administration at the Open University and the University of Amsterdam, with a specialisation on “The Policy of Arts [in the Netherlands].”
Within my studies I had courses on Visual Art, Musicology, The Art of Film, Philosophy, Ethics, Literature, “Big History” [from Big Bang until now], Epistemology, Collecting [Museology], Politicology, Policy, Business Affairs, Marketing.
I worked as a curator – exhibition maker – at the Dutch Film Museum [now Eye Film], as an assistent Change Management for the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam and as a Customer Relationship Manager at the ING Bank Netherlands.
As a photographer and writer I am self-taught, although I participated in various workshops on analogue film development and printing techniques in my late teens and early twenties. I got my first camera [a Fujica SP2] when I was eight, so I was captured with photo fever in my childhood. I also had training in writing essays and poetry.
So far I have published 8 books; however 4 of them in updated editions [so actually 12 books in total]:
– Blauwe Aarde – Blue Earth [2007] a novel – Nederlands / Dutch language only. I am still working on a translation. Neither available in printed and digital form.
– Catcher of Light – Vanger van Licht [2009] a photo book – English and Dutch. No longer available, neither digital and print versions.
– Tijdschrijver MMXXIV [2024] collected poetry – Dutch. First edition published in 2010 and no longer available. Re-issued in 2024 as Tijdschrijver MMXXIV [2024]. Hardcover book in Dutch and American-English and also as the digital download.
– Volcano’s View [2010] a photo book – English. Available as a digital download and as a hardcover photo book.
– Greecis [2014] a photo book – English
– Willekeur 1 – 20 [2021] computer generated poetry – Dutch. First released in 2014 and here available in a re-issued edition from 2021. Hardcover book and digital download.
– Timewriter MMXV [2024] collected poetry – English. First released in 2015 and re-issued in 2024 as Timewriter MMXXIV [2024]. Hardcover book and digital download.
– At Random 1 – 20 [2021] computer generated poetry – English. First released in 2015 and re-issued in 2022]. Hardcover book and digital download.
